How It Works
Unlike volume-to-volume conversions, converting cups to grams requires knowing the density of the ingredient. A cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of honey because flour has more air space between particles.
This calculator uses standard baking weights for each ingredient. For best accuracy in baking, use the "spoon and level" method for flour: spoon flour into the measuring cup and level with a knife, rather than scooping directly from the bag.
Professional bakers prefer weight measurements because they're more precise and consistent. If your recipe calls for 120g flour, you'll get the same amount every time, regardless of how packed or aerated the flour is.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do different flours have different weights?
Different flours have different protein contents and grind sizes. Cake flour is lighter and more finely milled (114g/cup), while bread flour is denser with higher protein (127g/cup). All-purpose flour falls in between at 120g/cup.
Should I pack brown sugar when measuring?
Yes, brown sugar should be firmly packed into the measuring cup. Our conversion uses the packed measurement (220g/cup). If a recipe says "loosely packed," reduce the weight by about 15-20%.
Why is weighing ingredients better than using cups?
Cup measurements can vary by 20% or more depending on how you scoop and pack ingredients. Weight measurements are consistent every time, leading to more reliable results in baking where precision matters.
